Hanunuo Mangyan Ramit featuring hand embroidery by the Itneg tribe from Abra.

The Hanunuo Mangyans excel in traditional weaving using a backstrap loom known as the harablon. Mangyan Ramit is distinguished by its intricate geometric patterns. The Hanunuo Mangyan refer to their weaving process as “habilan” and the loom itself as “harablon.”

Hanunuo-Mangyan men typically wear a loincloth (ba-ag) and a shirt (balukas), while women don an indigo-dyed short skirt (ramit) and a blouse (lambung). Many traditional shirts and blouses feature back embroidery with a design called pakudos, which is based on the cross shape.

The pakudos, believed to ward off evil spirits, is incorporated into clothing, blankets, and accessories.
